A New Chapter in a Long Story of Hope in Gunchire
It began around a campfire in Ethiopia.
Two children told us they wanted to go to school - but couldn't. They had to work in the fields to survive, earning a dollar a day to feed themselves because their mother was blind, and unable to support their family. That conversation changed everything.
For more than 15 years, we have walked alongside the families of Gunchire. First keeping children in school instead of the fields through a sponsorship program. Then, keeping families together through launching small businesses, and slowly transforming an entire community.
The result? Over a decade later, the local government came to our partners with the miraculous news that there were little to no cases of child abandonment in the community.
Families are stronger. Parents are working. Children are safer.
Now, the final piece of the puzzle has become clear:
Access to early childhood education.
The Need
Gunchire is a growing rural town facing complex challenges. While primary schools exist, structured early childhood education is largely unavailable. So even as parents build stable businesses and create better lives, they still face one major obstacle: There is nowhere safe and affordable to send their young children.
With 90% of brain development occurring before age five, the earliest years shape everything. Children who start primary school already behind face a gap that can follow them for a lifetime.
A classroom is one of the safest places a child can be. Not only is it safe, but it’s a place where they can thrive.

The Vision
To build a dedicated early childhood development center on land already owned by our local partners - designed specifically for the youngest learners.
The campus will include:
• 6 classrooms
• A dedicated children’s library
• Cafeteria
• Playgrounds and green spaces
• Safe, welcoming learning environments
Phase 1: Build 6 classrooms
Phase 2: Add 3 additional classrooms
Every detail is designed to support healthy development, safety, dignity, and learning.

This preschool is more than a building.
It is a strategic next step in everything already happening in Gunchire:

• They want education for their children
• But access has been the missing link.
Now, families won’t have to choose between working to provide and keeping their children safe.
With a local preschool:
